What to Bring on Your Student Travels

By Amanda Cohen on June 18, 2017

Even though people travel as a form of vacation, it can honestly be extremely stressful. Between finding flights to finding hotels, to booking activities and dinner reservations you probably have your hands full.

If any of my readers are like me then they understand the stress and annoyance that comes with the worst travel activity of all: packing (cue dramatic music). Ah yes, packing comes with its own set of trepidation, as forgetting the perfect item can be tragic but do not let this discourage your travels. Since packing is one of my least favorite activities but traveling is one of my favorite activities, I have devised a short, but effective, cheat-sheet that helps with all your travel needs.

Rompers and dresses

It is so easy to overpack when going on vacation, so I like to bring simple items that can be re-worn in different and trendy ways. Rompers and dresses are great because (1) they don’t take up a lot of room, (2) they can be worn with different accessories so you can re-wear these items multiple times over your vacation, (3) they are comfortable, and (4) you can dress them up or dress them down.

Rompers and dresses apply perfectly to any time of vacation you plan for; you can wear them on the beach, you can wear them to a fancy dinner, you can wear them to a casual lunch, you can wear them to go site-seeing, the list goes on and on. I like to have at least two rompers and/or dresses in my arsenal because I hate wearing jeans and I feel like I’m wearing pajamas when I have on a romper or dress.

Trendy sneakers

Sneakers are no longer just worn for athletic and adventurous purposes. If you shop in stores or online, you will automatically see that every single designer and store has a surplus of fun, cute sneakers to wear daily. Sneakers are not only comfortable but also the perfect alternative to sandals if you get grossed out with feet like I do.

Whoever decided to bring back the sneaker trend is a genius because they can be worn anywhere (I’m currently wearing my Adidas Super Star sneakers at work). Even though you can’t wear sneakers to a fancy dinner, you can wear them just about everywhere else. I recommend bringing a simple pair of sneakers so that you can match them with anything and so you don’t have to clutter your suitcase with more than one pair.

However, if you are going on a trip where you will be walking around a lot, it doesn’t hurt to have two pairs in your suitcase so you can change it up!

Jeans

I know that I said earlier in the article that I hate wearing jeans, but sometimes you just got to suck it up and put on a pair of these bad boys. Since it’s summertime, it’s best to pack two pairs of jeans with you; a pair of light-wash blue jeans and a pair of white jeans.

Jeans are a great option when you are walking around and the weather is a little nippy, or if you are going to a semi-casual dinner and you want to pair it with a nice blouse. It’s not a new fact that jeans are versatile and can be worn with a variety of different items, but there are jeans that are fun and abstract that I recommend looking at.

For example, I am currently wearing a pair of jeans that have lace “knee pads.” I’ve gotten so many compliments on them and so will you! You can wear these jeans with your trendy sneakers and boom … you got a killer outfit!

Jean jackets

There is nothing better than finding a perfectly-fitting, cute jean jacket. The beauty of jean jackets is that they go with just about anything! If you find one quality jean jacket, that’s all you need to bring in your suitcase because you can rule the world with this purchase. You can rock the jacket with your dresses, your rompers, and, if you feel adventurous, wear jean on jean and pair your denim pants with your denim jacket!

The most versatile jean jacket is one that is loose, a little cropped, and light-washed denim. Denim in general can take up a lot of space, which is why you should only stick to one jacket per vacation. If you don’t have any room in your bag, wear it on the plane — this is one item that you do not want to have to sacrifice!

Neutral cloth t-shirts and tank-tops

I know that the heading does not sell these items as a must-have fashion travel necessity, but I promise that neutral cloth tops will be your saving grace while on vacation. You can find shirts like these super cheap from Forever 21 and H&M (I’ll pause a minute while you switch your browser to these websites and fill your shopping carts up). You ready? Okay great!

I recommend getting these shirts in white, gray, and black and I would buy both regular t-shirts and tank tops because you can use these items anytime, anywhere. Taking a beach vacation? No problem; throw one of these babies over your swimsuit. Going site-seeing? No problem; wear one of these tops with a jean jacket and some jeans. Going to bed? No problem; wear one of these tops with your coziest sweatpants.

You can easily accessorize these tops and since they match with basically anything, you can pack three of them to wear throughout your entire trip. Another bonus is that they don’t take up that much room!

I hope that these fashion tips will make your travel preparations a little less stressful! Safe travels and have fun!
