Move It or Lose It?

By Elizabeth Hilfrank on May 25, 2017

As another school year reaches termination, take advantage of the packing hassle to terminate some of the clothes that have been burdening your closet all year. While you, like me, may have problems getting rid of those t-shirts that have some sort of low-key ~sentimental~ value, I promise that now is the time to get over the sentiments and give yourself a reason to shop.

Here are some tips to figure out what should stay and what should go.

1. Start small

In order to not overwhelm yourself, begin the cleansing process with the most boring but also easiest part of your wardrobe: socks and underwear. All you have to do is look at the quality of these. Do your socks have holes? Underwear showing wear and tear? Throw them out!

2. Quality

The first step above will help you when you get to the bigger clothing items. Despite popular belief, jeans do not last forever. Over time the seat of pants gets worn out from the countless hours in class and at the library, and belt loops become detached from the pants when you have to pull your pants up frequently from not using a belt.

Check through all of your clothes for small holes or areas where the threads have started to unweave. Throw these out!

3. Fit

Believe it or not, not all clothes fit the same as they did when you first purchased them. So, have a little fashion show, and check for shrinkage or anything that has stretched out. This is where the opinions of your friends and family can be of help.

4. Frequency

You’ve just gone through two entire semesters of school. Go through your closet and drawers and think about how often you wore certain items. If you never wore something over nine months, then you probably don’t need it. Bid it farewell.

5. Age

Think about how long you have owned your clothes. If you are going into your senior year of college and are still wearing the same clothes from your senior year of high school, then it’s time to change it up. People are getting tired of seeing you in the same things year after year.

IMPORTANT! Just because a piece of clothing may not be right for you anymore, this fact does not mean that no one can benefit from the shirt, dress, skirt, or pants. If you are getting rid of some stuff that is still of decent quality, donate it! You’ll feel even more comfortable saying goodbye to it knowing that someone else will be made happy.

Good luck!
