Junior Year at Its Best

By Maria Paola Delgado on October 22, 2016

To all juniors:

Time is running out, whether we like it or not. You might be thinking, “I still got time, I got a year and a half.”

Exactly, only one year and a half left out of our four years in our bachelor’s degree. I now understand what my mom’s friends meant when they said, “enjoy every minute of your college experience because it goes by in a blink of an eye,” “My bachelor’s degree was the best four years of my life,” and “if there is a time to do whatever you want to do it’s college. Be responsible but enjoy it.”

This is junior year at its best.

In the first few weeks of this school year, we heard a lot of “it’s time you get internships,” “start looking at companies and/or law firms and reach out to them.”

While I was hearing all of this the only thing I was thinking was, “Oh! This is serious. I need to get my life together now. I’m going to start adulting soon.”

Junior year is a very big deal. Most of us turn 21, therefore it means it’s time to get rid of our fake IDs (speaking of my friends)!! Of course, this includes going out to bars and party like you haven’t before or throwing the BEST PARTY YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO!!!

Start planning and squeeze in every road trip you can. Take fall break, Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, Spring, and Easter break to go road tripping with your friends. Think of them as five more opportunities to have a bachelorette party. Las Vegas, here we come!

Aside from having a good time, it’s also time to put on our big girl pants and study as hard as we can. We want to graduate with the best grades we’ve ever had. It’s time to give it our all. It isn’t easy, but it’s possible. We all dread the all-nighters we do for a paper that was announced three weeks in advance but at that moment we thought, “it’s due in three weeks, I got more than time to do it,” but then you practiced the wonderful inaction of procrastination and left it all for the last minute.

When we remember we have a paper due in a few days, we do everything we can possibly think off to not do it. For example, you start cleaning the house like you’re Cinderella — even your roommate’s room if it’s possible.

Taking a serious note, be true to yourself and to others. Let’s leave all the high school drama exactly where it belongs: in high school. Take a breath and just let things sink in. Now it’s the time to be comfortable with yourself and the ones that surround you. Love yourself just the way you are. We all have imperfections but those are the things that make us unique and sometimes ever more beautiful.

Don’t let anyone hold you back; you’ve got to feel like you could conquer the world if you have the opportunity to do so. Start with a single step but continue walking until you’ve done your full journey. Remember we’re 3/4 done with our college journey …
